There is lots going on in North Wellington currently.

In Churton Park there has been earthworks at the South end of Churton on the neighbouring rise of Ohariu Rd perhaps signaling the beginning of the new road link between Johnsonville (Cortina Avenue) and Churton (Westchester Drive).

There is certainly plenty of action at the North end of Westchester Drive with the motorway extension well underway.

The Churton Park Village is beginning to take shape with roofs and cladding on a number of the main buildings. The current look is modern and unique. New World has begun advertising for staff for the new supermarket. If you know anyone who may be interested in working in a new family orientated, community based store, for operators who have had prior supermarket experience then email for an application form  nwchurton@gmail.com.

The new Churton Park school in Amesbury Drive is looking great with the design and cladding echoing the Village. The fields are laid out and grass is growing well. Local families are looking forward to making use of brand new facilities. The school will be open term one next year.

On the East side of the motorway, there is continued earthworks North of Granada Village in the new Hunters Hill subdivision on the hillside rising towards Horokiwi. If you haven’t had a walk up the new roading, make a point of it on the next fine evening. it affords an awesome view and fresh perspective of the Northern Suburbs.

The New World in the Newlands Shopping Centre continues to progress with foundations well on the way to being completed and external wall structures and ground floor being placed.

Other changes noticed in recent weeks include the McDonalds facelift – incorporating a double lane drive through, a McCafe and new smaller internal playground. Woolworths has finally disappeared from Johnsonville with the Countdown rebranding complete.

Just last week I also noticed bright shiny new carriages on the Johnsonville Line but wasn’t quick enough with my camera to snap a pic. Transmetro is testing the new Matangi units.

The new trains have been running on the Hutt Valley Line since February and will begin running on the Johnsonville Line early next year. Forty-two cars, more than 40% of the Matangi fleet, are now in Wellington. Twenty-six cars, that’s 13 two-car sets, have been commissioned and are available for service.

The new trains are more comfortable, and have a  modern feel and quieter smoother ride. The trains are air-conditioned, have high quality passenger information display and audio information systems, and a special low floor area for less able-bodied passengers, those in wheelchairs and those with buggies.
