I found this great webinar on the REINZ website.
Well worth a watch if you have a leaky era home or know someone who does.
There is the suggestion by Jeff Montgomery, Manager of the Weathertight Services Group of the Department of Building and Housing that between 22,000 and 89,000 homes are estimated to be leaky, however, to date, only 3500 have been fixed.
“The new financial package option for many homeowners offers an alternative to expensive litigation through the Courts or dispute resolution through the Weathertight Homes Tribunal. It’s focus is on getting homes repaired, not liability or blame”, Jeff said.
I reckon that this offering is a great start for owners of leaky homes but I don’t understand why there are restrictions on application. To receive the package, a home must have been built less than10 years ago (which leaves a vast swathe of monolithic homes out in the dark). If you have a own a home in this era, get it checked immediately and if problems are found, lodge a claim so that you “stop the clock” before your ten years runs out!
