There has been lots of activity in the Newlands Mall area in the past week with major earthworks begun on the the location of the bright and sparkling New World supermarket that will be the jewel in the crown of the central Newlands amenities hub. Over the weekend Treescape has spent time transplanting a number of pohutukawas from the road reserve and edges of the current carpark to a sunny spot on the bank on the other side of Newlands Road.
The development by private land owners will correspond with further develop0ment and beautification of the remaining areas in the shopping centre by the Council to give Newlands and the surrounding area amenities that have been missing since the previous New World closed it’s doors many years ago. No longer will the residents of Newlands, Bellevue and Woodridge have to drive to Johnsonville for a good grocery selection. With the building of the New World supermarkets in Churton Park and Newlands, the Newlands Town Centre will be revived and again become the vibrant heart of a growing suburb, and best of all, gr0cery shoppers will have true competition in the area for Countdown/Woolworths. So expect the petrol discounts and grocery specials to get better!

An unashamed plug for a local Newlands Mall business
NB. I just hope that there is still room in the newly refreshed mall for my favourite takeaway – Curry to go. I’m a friday night regular and have never had a bad meal from the very hard working and talented owners. If you live in the area and have never followed the delicious aroma that wafts through the mall carpark to its source, or entered the wonderfully exotic spice shop next door, I urge you to visit this week!
You can see their menu here. They deliver to the surrounding suburbs. My fav picks are either Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Shabnam, or Fish Malabari. Don’t forget to grab a freshly made garlic naan straight from their tandoor oven.
