Tried the new Tulsi in Johnsonville on Sunday night. It was very quiet, guaranteeing that we got attentive and lightening fast service.
We opted for the banquet version of the menu as all four of us weren’t too fussy. We each paid $27.50 for entrees and mains along with rice and plain naan.
The entrees consisted of a generous plate of onion bhaji, and a combined plate of spicy sausage (seekh kebab?) and a tandoori-ish garlic chicken along with a couple of sauces.
The plate of bhaji was more than enough for our table of four and was delicious. The kebab was a little tough and wasn’t finished.
For mains the banquet menu gave us a bowl each of rogan josh, butter chicken, a balti and a navratan korma to share. I didn’t try the butter chicken as I tend to like the hotter dishes and butter chicken is too mild and too full of cream and sugar for me. The rogan josh was good but lacked a little fresh zing. The balti was great and I could have had more of this dish. The vegetarian korma was rather average to me and was on a non vegetarian banquet menu (you have the choice of vegetarian or non vegetarian) so I didn’t feel that it fit at all. Creamy cauliflower and beans is just not my thing at an Indian restaurant.
The make over in Johnsonville is great and must have cost a wad of cash. The space was completely different from the two dollar shop that previously occupied the space.
Will I go there again?
All in all it was a lovely meal out but there are other choices in the area. I’m sure they will be busy for a while by bringing the Tulsi reputation to the suburbs and as the new kids on the block in the northern Suburbs.
I like the fitout and menu at Daawat in Johnsonville. I enjoy watching the chef working with the tandoor oven and the food is more tasty to me, so if I was eating out, I would still go there.
If I was ordering takeaways, I can’t go past Curry to Go (ph 4776662) in the Newlands mall for fresh and tasty garlic naan and beef madras. I have worked my way through the menu a number of times and am such a regular they recognise my voice on the phone when I ring up for my friday dose of chilli. Tastier curry for less money. My fav!
