Recently the site of people running with the wind on the Western hills above Johnsonville drew my attention.
Upon finding the hub of all the activity I was informed that all this activity was an annual Orienteering Mt KaukauĀ event.
If you are struggling for something to do with the kids outside maybe you should check out the local orienteering websites and sign the family up for an afternoon.
Orienteering can be defined as a family of sports that requires navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain. Participants are given a map, usually a specially prepared orienteering map, which they use to find control points. Usually it involves racing against a clock.
Orienteering appears to have its roots in scouting and it a great way to exercise the body and the mind at the same time. Map reading, compass reading, following instructions, general fitness, and the ability to make quick and accurate decisions all make it an excellent activity to encourage growing young minds with members as young as 5 or 6 years old taking part.
